What is a VA PTSD Statement?
A VA PTSD statement, submitted on VA Form 21-0781, Statement in Support of Claim for Service Connection for PTSD, describes the traumatic stressor event(s) that led to your diagnosis. This form asks for specific details โ dates, locations, units, and the nature of the event โ because the VA needs to verify that a qualifying in-service stressor occurred before it can grant service connection for PTSD.
Not every PTSD claim requires the same level of proof. If your stressor is related to "fear of hostile military or terrorist activity" and is consistent with the places, types, and circumstances of your service, the VA may accept your own statement as sufficient without requiring independent corroboration, per 38 C.F.R. ยง 3.304(f)(3). Combat veterans with certain decorations may also qualify for reduced evidentiary burden. Non-combat stressors, personal assault (covered separately on VA Form 21-0781a), and other claims often need more corroboration, such as buddy statements or unit records.
This statement works alongside โ not instead of โ a current PTSD diagnosis from a mental health provider and a medical nexus connecting the diagnosis to the stressor. See the VA's official page on Form 21-0781 for the full instructions on what's required.
