What is a VA Nexus Letter?
A VA nexus letter is a written medical opinion — typically from a physician, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, or other qualified medical professional — that states whether it is "at least as likely as not" (a 50% or greater probability) that your current diagnosed condition is connected to an event, injury, or exposure during your military service. It is one of the three legs of a service-connection claim, alongside a current diagnosis and evidence of an in-service event.
Unlike a lay statement or personal statement, a nexus letter must come from someone qualified to render a medical opinion — the VA gives little to no weight to a lay person's opinion on medical causation. The letter needs to reference your specific diagnosis, the in-service event or exposure, and explain the medical reasoning connecting the two, not just state a conclusion. This is often called the "nexus" — the missing link between service and the condition you're claiming today.
Zero Dark Claims does not write or sign medical opinions for you — no software tool legally can. What our builder does is help you organize your medical and service history into a clear, well-organized packet you can bring to your own doctor, so they have everything they need to write an informed, specific opinion. See the VA's own explanation of evidence needed for a disability claim for how medical nexus opinions fit into the bigger picture.
